KEEPING SAFE WHILE WORKING AT HEIGHTS

Most cleaning work is routine, but the problem is keeping safe while working at heights. As a rule, we consider such a task lightly and run the risk of falling and getting seriously hurt.

Not only are we at risk, but we also can inadvertently hurt those below, by dropping some heavy tool. This is common to hear of people suffering grave injuries, by falling from heights, while working, yet we continue to keep taking unnecessary risks, and do not take adequate precautions. Such falls can cause serious injury and leave one with a physical disability for lomgtimein life. All it takes is a minor distraction or miscalculation to lose balance and fall.

Most people have a tendency to position the ladder in one place at the middle of the room and try to reach out to every corner from that same position; thus overstretching and risking a fall. Many times we try and assemble fixtures, right at the high level they are to be fitted. This should be avoided if possible and assembling should be done at ground level and then hoisted to its desired position.

While, we cannot avoid such chores, it is advisable to take precautions before embarking on such a task. Following are a few basic tips to keep in mind, while cleaning higher levels of your home:

• If possible one should avoid doing such work, especially if one has neither experience nor the necessary instruments. There are many professional Cleaning companies, which are highly skilled and can perform a terrific job in cleaning your home ceilings and upper walls. Moreover, these companies have trained personnel; well equipped and experienced in such work.

• Once you decide to do the job yourself, first of all map out the elevated areas of your home and divide it into reachable sections. When you go ahead with your cleaning, approach each unit at a time, positioning yourself within touching distance of the areas to be cleaned. This way, you will not stretch out too far. It will also ensure that you get a thorough job done, without missing any corner or pane.

• Next write a checklist of all the tools and accessories required; such as step ladders, long handled brushes, etc. Go through all of them in detail to determine whether they are operational or not. Stepladders that wobble or are missing rungs are a big no-no. Immediately replace them or get them repaired properly. For heavy work such as installing windows, erect scaffoldings, to give support and wear a safety harness. Many a mishap can be averted by just doing a little homework and learning how to use equipment properly before using.

• Last but not the least, use appropriate safeguards to ensure that others passing below come to no harm, due to any unforeseen accident. If possible secure the area below and cordon it. Tools should be ideally be roped, to prevent from falling down.

Ultimately, it is your own personal approach that counts. It is best not to hurry or rush through such work. Take it slowly and never look for shortcuts. Not only will you complete the job without hurting anyone, but you will come away with the satisfaction of having done the job well.
